Treasury Announces Federal Government Will Phase Out Paper Checks on September 30th

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments beginning September 30, 2025.

What this means for you:

  • If you already receive Social Security, Veterans benefits, or other federal payments by direct deposit, no action is required.

  • If you still receive a paper check, you’ll need to switch to an electronic method before the deadline.

How to enroll in direct deposit:

  • Contact the federal agency that pays your benefit.

  • Enroll online at GoDirect.gov.

  • Call the Treasury’s Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800-967-6857 (Mon–Fri, 9 a.m.–7 p.m. ET).

Don’t have a bank account?

  • Visit FDIC: GetBanked or MyCreditUnion.gov for safe options to open an account.

  • Or sign up for a Direct Express® Debit Mastercard®, a Treasury-sponsored debit card for benefit payments.

Stay alert: Scammers may try to impersonate government agencies. Always confirm requests using official websites or trusted phone numbers.
