The IRS announced the 2026 standard mileage rates, providing tax professionals with an important planning update for clients who drive for business, medical, charitable or qualified moving purposes. Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the business standard mileage rate increases to 72.5 cents per mile, up 2.5 cents from 2025. The standard mileage rate for medical travel decreases to 20.5 cents per mile, down 0.5 cents, while the charitable mileage rate remains 14 cents per mile because it is set by statute.
The mileage rate for qualified moving expenses is 20.5 cents per mile. Certain active-duty members of the Armed Forces may apply this rate to qualified moving expenses, and certain members of the intelligence community are now also eligible due to the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act(OBBBA).
The IRS emphasized that the rates apply to gasoline, diesel, hybrid and fully electric vehicles. Taxpayers may generally choose between the standard mileage rate and actual vehicle expenses, but proper documentation and substantiation remain essential.
