October 2025
If you filed for a federal tax extension earlier this year, Wednesday, October 15, 2025, is your final deadline to submit your 2024 tax return without late-filing penalties.
The IRS confirms that this deadline remains in effect despite the government shutdown. Taxpayers are encouraged to e-file and choose direct deposit—the fastest and most secure way to submit returns and receive refunds.
Keep in mind that an extension only postpones the filing deadline, not the payment due date. Any tax owed was still due by April 15, 2025, and interest and penalties continue to accrue on unpaid balances.
Taxpayers can log in to their IRS Online Account to view balances, request transcripts, and access prior-year documents.
